John Ernst Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, on February 27 in 1902. His mom, Olive Steinbeck, was a teacher. He attended Salinas High School and graduated in 1919. After high school John Steinbeck went to Stanford University to study English literature. After collage he pursued  his writing career in New York. Then he returned to California. John Steinbecks first published novel was called Cup of Gold . He was awarded a nobel prize for literature in 1962. He died December 20, 1968 in New York City
